We have a dream that one day we will be parents.
My wife & I have been trying to have a baby since April 2014. We tried for year and several months but didn’t have any success, so we went to a fertility doctor.
The doctor sent us to have lots of tests done to see if there were any issues that could be identified.
It turns out there are problems with both of us and that IVF would be our only option, if it is an option. The last year has been really difficult for us emotionally, lots of worst-case scenarios have gone though our heads. Will we ever be parents? Can we even have children? How will we afford this? Can we even do IVF?
One of those questions was answered a few weeks ago. My wife had explorative surgery. The result of that is we can go ahead with IVF! (But of course, there’s no guarantee it will work). Our doctor has said that we can do IVF this year (we were thinking we may not even get to start it until 2017).
Sometime in June/July 2016 we are going to start. There’s a lot that still needs to happen between now and then; We have a lot of paperwork that needs doing, we both want to be in the best place possible with our health, working out a lot. We also have a lot of saving to do, the Australian healthcare system covers half the cost, we have to pay for the other half.
It’s extremely exciting to know we can do IVF this year. We’ve had some really low lows and it seemed like the bad news was never going to end. But now there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Having to do IVF does push out our investing a bit further, but we’re okay with that. We completely understand the benefits of investing as much as you can, compounding your returns over time, spending your money only on things that matter to you. What is the purpose of having money at the end of it all? For us, at this point in our lives, it’s to be able to have children. I’d swap all the money I could ever have from investing, in exchange for our future children (I hope it doesn’t cost that much).
Investing is going to play a huge part in our life and investing is the main topic of this blog. This blog is about our life. Having children and doing IVF is such a huge part of our life (and a really big expense) that we wanted to share it with you as well, we wanted to share with you more than just our dividends.
I hope that us sharing our personal finance journey can help inspire people, that you can juggle life and investing. I’m not a rich guy, we don’t earn a lot of money, but I know that we will achieve our goals with the right motivation and hard work.
